LADY PUMAS SECURE WIN OVER BOWIE WITH DOMINANT THIRD QUARTER

BOWIE – After a close battle in the first half, Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School dominated the third quarter to lead the Lady Pumas to a 58-50 victory over Bowie High School in a high school basketball match on Jan. 26.

The game started off quite competitively as both teams felt each other out. There were a lot of unnecessary turnovers which cost both teams possessions, but the girls hustled for loose balls to show how bad they wanted to win the game.

With a tight defensive battle in the first quarter, Wise had a slight advantage and led 10-6 after the first period.

The next quarter was the same as both teams went back-and-forth throughout the quarter.

Wise and Bowie seemed evenly matched until the Lady Pumas took over the last two minutes of the first half. With Wise being more aggressive on both sides of the ball, the Lady Pumas ended the second quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 24-16 lead into halftime.

“We were being resilient and not giving up on the next play,” Bowie Head Coach Makia Staves said. “I think we are still learning and building as a program. They are coming together, and they continue work hard, attacking the basket, rebounding and just working.”

At the beginning of the third quarter, Wise started to pull away from Bowie. They started the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 17-point lead, led by Kaitlyn Parker, who had a game-high of 14 points.

“I’m left-handed, so my mindset is that nobody can guard me,” Parker said with confidence. “So, whoever was guarding me, I just took them every time. I took the ball inside, or I did a step back jumper and shot it.

I’m averaging 15 points per game, but I feel like I can get 20 or more. My team played well today too. We passed the ball well, and we were aggressive with rebounding because of boxing out.”

Bowie could not get their offense going, and Wise took full advantage as they scored off of every Bowie missed opportunity.

Despite being down, Bowie was not out of it as they went on an 8-1 run to cut the lead down to 10 points late in the third quarter.

Although Bowie had a very efficient quarter as they outscored Wise 14-8, they still trailed 42-30 as they went into the final frame.

Being down, Bowie came out of the gates strong in the final period as they cut the lead down to single digits for the first time since the start of the second quarter.

Wise came right back as they extended the lead to double digits after a short run of their own. Bowie fought to the very end as it cut the lead down to six points late in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late.

Wise closed out the game with clutch shots and defensive stops.

“We shared the ball, and that was the most important thing,” Wise Head Coach Stephon Seraile said. “They were looking for cutters, and we have preached all year long to attack and then for cutters to dump off to.

I think we played well but we weren’t hitting shots that we typically hit, but we did attack the basket. We still give up way too many paint touches, but I think we got into our Georgetown defense and it helped out a lot, which is our pressure defense. We get a little stagnant sometimes, but when we pick up the intensity, and we start to dial in, they are an outstanding group playing aggressively.”

The Lady Pumas have now won three of their past four games.
